Image 1 of 2. Breast reduction surgery. Large breasts before surgery to reduce them in size. Breast surgery (mammoplasty) is often carried out to reduce the size of a breast or reconstruct its shape or position. Typically, incisions are made around the nipple, down to the chest and around under the breast. The skin over the breast is lifted, allowing excess tissue and skin to be removed. The remaining breast tissue is repositioned and/or reshaped, and the skin closed around the new breast mound and original nipple. For an image of the same woman after the breast reduction surgery see image M590/200.
