Hair transplant surgery. Image 9 of 9. Hair plug being inserted into a hole on the crown of a man's head during a hair transplant operation. The other holes have already been filled. The patient has male pattern baldness (alopecia), which is being treated by a cosmetic surgery procedure known as punch grafting, the most common method of hair transplant. Hairy scalp was harvested from the back of the head, and divided into plugs. Each plug contains at least one hair follicle, which will take root in the new position to replace hair lost through baldness. For a sequence of images of punch grafting, see M590/210 to M590/218.
