Man before cosmetic eyelid surgery. Image 1 of 8. Close-up of the face of a middle-aged man before cosmetic eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty). With age, skin loses its elasticity and muscles slacken. When this happens around the eyes it results in puffiness and drooping eyelids, as seen here. Blepharoplasty is a procedure that removes excess skin, fat and muscles from the upper and/or lower eyelids. This leaves the patient looking younger and less tired. The surgery can be performed as a day procedure, under local anaesthetic. As with all surgery there is a risk of infection, excessive bleeding and other complications, including blindness. For a sequence of the operation see M590/328 - M590/334.
