Cosmetic eyelid surgery. Image 3 of 8. Local anaesthetic being injected into the upper eyelid of a middle-aged man before cosmetic eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty). With age, skin loses its elasticity and muscles slacken. When this happens around the eyes it results in puffiness and drooping eyelids. Blepharoplasty is a procedure that removes excess skin, fat and muscles from the upper and/or lower eyelids. This leaves the patient looking younger and less tired. The surgery is being performed under local anaesthetic, as a day procedure. As with all surgery there is a risk of infection, excessive bleeding and other complications, including blindness.
