A selection of used and broken hip joint prostheses. Such prostheses have a limited lifespan; the components of the joint themselves may crack or the cement joining bone and artificial parts may loosen. Hip replacement surgery is indicated in advanced cases of osteo- arthritis. In this disease destruction of the central part of the cartilage lining the joint is accompanied by an overgrowth of the outer cartilage. This overgrowth results in the development of bony spurs or osteophytes, which restrict the movement of the joint.
