Prosthetic knees. Coloured X-ray showing the replacement of both knee joints with artificial or prosthetic joints (dense yellow, centre, at the end of both long bones). The damage to the joints was caused by severe rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is one type of arthritis, a general term used to describe inflammation of the joints. The disease affects joints symmetrically: joints of the fingers, wrists, feet, ankles, hips and shoulders are affected. Rheumatoid arthritis is diagnosed by a blood test that reveals the presence of the rheumatic factor and by X-rays that show typical erosion of the joints.
