Cochlear implant components. Surgeon's gloved hand holds the receiver (lower frame) and electrode array (upper left) components of a cochlear implant (CI) for deaf patients. The receiver is surgically implanted under the skin of the scalp near the ear. The wire with electrode array is inserted deep into the cochlear of the inner ear, to enable sound impulses to reach the brain. The patient wears externally a transmitter, microphone and a sound processor box. CI surgery is performed on profoundly deaf patients unable to be helped by conventional hearing aids. A cochlear implant gives the patient an awareness of sounds and speech that assists the patient to lip-read.
