Caption

Artificial hip (red, foreground) with an X-ray of the joint in situ (background). The head of the implant (purple, upper centre) is in its socket in the hip bone of the pelvis. The shaft of the implant is embedded in a hole drilled in the shaft of the femur (thigh bone). The head of the implant has replaced the head of the femur, which has been removed. This operation restores mobility to those affected by conditions such as arthritis and osteoporosis.
