Ear with cochlear implant. X-ray of the ear of a patient who has a cochlear implant (coiled wires, left and centre). This is a prosthetic hearing device used in cases of deafness. A set of electrodes (centre, white) are implanted in the cochlea in the inner ear. Sound from an external microphone device is transmitted by wires (at upper left) to the electrodes. The electrodes then transmit the sound as electrical impulses to the auditory nerve, allowing the patient to hear the sounds. This is a transorbital view, across the orbit of one of the eyes.
