Toe prosthesis following amputation. This "spacer" prosthesis (pink) covers the stump of a 79-year-old woman's amputated second toe. The toe was amputated following chronic ulceration in a case of hammer toe. Hammer toe is a condition in which some toes become permanently bent. Symptoms include pain in the affected foot and leg, causing difficulty walking. It is caused by wearing ill-fitting shoes which cramp the toes. If left untreated, it can lead to complications, as here.
