Artificial urinary sphincter. Coloured frontal X- ray of a 64-year-old man with an artificial urinary sphincter (AUS). A urinary sphincter is a muscle that acts as a valve and controls the amount of urine leaving the bladder. This patient has had a prostatectomy (prostate gland removal), which damaged the sphincter and caused severe incontinence. The round mass at upper centre is a pressure regulating balloon that enables the urine to flow at an even rate when the artificial valve (lower centre) is open. Here, the valve is closed. M600/397.
