Comparison between a conventional prosthetic 'hook' (left) and Jacques Monestier's new prosthetic hand. Monestier used his experience of making automatons to design this hand which had to be both easy to operate and simple to repair. Unlike most artificial hands, all of the fingers are articulated, so the user may fully grasp objects rather than just gripping them between thumb and forefinger. Despite this, the hand may be operated using a simple shoulder harness; with practice a wearer may write or draw with little difficulty. The hand, weighing 500g, has a shell made from a bronze/beryllium alloy with a gilt finish, whilst the palm is made of soft leather.
