Artificial hand. A Leverhume Oxford Southampton myoelectric prosthetic hand holds an egg. The 400- gram hand mimics a human hand's functions. Sensors on the wearer's skin detect electrical activity in the wearer's forearm muscles when they are flexed. A built-in computer interprets the signals and orders the hand to open, close or grip. It also monitors how well an object is being held using touch sensors on the two "fingers" and "thumb". The grip is automatically corrected if the object begins to slip. The hand's lithium-ion batteries last 12 hours. The hand was developed by Dr Peter Kyberd of the Oxford Orthopaedic Engineering Centre in Oxford, Britain.
