Bionic hand. Dr Homer Rahnejat examining the intelligent bionic hand he has developed. This prosthesis can perform 85% of the tasks of a human hand. The hand will have 30 tiny pressure sensors built into the artificial skin covering its fingers and thumb. These sensors automatically adjust the hand's grip to objects of different shapes and sizes. It is also hoped to develop a neuro-synthesiser to convert nerve signals travelling to muscles in the forearm into a form the bionic hand can interpret mechanically. Dr Rahnejat leads a team from the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at Bradford University, England.
