Blister packs of Tenormin LS (generic name: atenolol), a type of beta-receptor blocking drug or beta blocker. This type of drug is widely used to treat angina, to lower blood pressure or to correct abnormal heart rhythms. It is also used to treat patients who develop heart symptoms in response to stress or tension. Beta blockers selectively block the beta-adrenergic receptors of the sympathetic nervous system & so decrease the activity of the heart. The heart of a healthy person under severe stress might beat at up to 200 times a minute. A course of atenolol ensures that the beats about 120 times per minute under the same conditions.
