Acyclovir. Bottles of Zovirax, a trade name for the antiviral drug acyclovir (hydroxyethoxy- methyl guanine). Bottles containing the drug in suspension, tablet and capsule form are present. Acyclovir was introduced in 1982 and is used to treat herpes simplex and herpes zoster infections. It has also some effect in cytomegalovirus and Epstein-Barr virus infections. Adverse effects are uncommon but symptoms, when they occur, include skin irritation, headache, dizziness, nausea and vomiting. In rare cases acyclovir may cause kidney damage.
