Clomiphene citrate fertility drug pill. This drug, marketed under the names clomid and serophene, is used to stimulate ovulation, the release of an egg from an ovary, in female fertility treatment. It blocks the effect of the hormone oestrogen on the pituitary gland in the brain. This causes it to produce increased amounts of follicle-stimulating hormone, which in turn stimulates the release of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone and luteinising hormone. Increased levels of these hormones cause follicles in the ovary to mature, leading to ovulation. As use of the drug can lead to multiple ovulation, patients have an increased chance of multiple births.
