ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters, responsible for transporting a variety of substances into body tissues. Three molecules of digoxin, a heart medication, are shown entering the ABC transporter pictured here. The administration of one type of drug to a patient can affect the efficacy of a second prescription if both drugs use the same transporter, because a single type of drug transporter is often responsible for the uptake of many kinds of drugs. Further, alterations in the expression or function of that transporter can result in multidrug resistance.
