Drug addict drinking a measure of the drug methadone. Methadone is an opiate analgesic that is often used as a substitute for opioid drugs such as heroin (diamorphine). The methadone drug mimics the effects of drugs like heroin and helps to combat withdrawal symptoms. When a drug addict is treated with methadone, the dose must gradually be reduced over time, since methadone itself is also highly addictive.
