Iron pill. A red pill containing the mineral iron. Iron is important in the body for the formation of different enzymes, for haemoglobin found in red blood cells, and myoglobin found in muscle cells. It is an essential component in the transfer of oxygen around the body. Iron is obtained from foods such as fish, liver, whole-grain cereals, leafy vegetables and nuts. Pregnant women may require iron supplements for healthy development of the foetus. A deficiency of iron may lead to anaemia.
