Orange and vitamin C pills. View of several vitamin C pills and slices of orange (Citrus sinensis). Oranges are a good source of Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid. It is a chemical which is required in small doses each day for the healthy running of the body. It is used to help maintain the immune system, and for healthy teeth and gums. It is also needed for effective wound healing, and aids the absorption of iron from food. Lack of vitamin C leads to the disease scurvy. Adults require around 60 milligrams of vitamin C each day. Pills such as these provide an alternative source for those on a poor diet.
