Lithium carbonate drug. View of a drug capsule containing 300 milligrams of lithium carbonate for treating mania or manic-depression. People with mania are overactive, with heightened emotions and sometimes delusions. Mania most commonly occurs as part of manic-depression, where the sufferer swings from the emotional low of depression to mania and back again. Lithium carbonate reduces excessive nerve activity in the brain, moderating mood swings. However as high lithium levels cause many side-effects, treatment must be closely monitored. Antipsychotic and antidepressant drugs are often also prescribed to manic-depressives.
