Taking aspirin. Woman placing a tablet of the painkilling (analgesic) drug aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) in a glass of water. The tablet is dissolved in the water which can then be drunk. Analgesics are used to relieve general pain such as headaches. Aspirin is also used to thin the blood, which reduces the risk of blood clots that can cause heart attacks and strokes.
