Japanese knotweed plant (Fallopia japonica) beside a river. This plant is used in herbal medicine in the treatment of burn injuries, boils and abscesses, poisonous snakebites, acute hepatitis, appendicitis, traumatic injuries and menstrual complaints. It was introduced to Europe from eastern Asia in the late 19th century. Photographed in Musselburgh, East Lothian, Scotland, UK, in August.
