Caption

Patient being prepared for an experimental form of cancer treatment using hyperthermia (heat treatment). Here, the patient's neck is being positioned under a radio source. The Selectotherm machine, developed by Manfred von Ardenne at the Dresden Institute, East Germany, uses radio waves to treat malignant tumours. In the 1960's, it was found that cancerous cells were more susceptible to destruction by heat than normal tissue.
