Electrotherapy pain treatment. Female patient receiving electro-stimulation to relieve upper back and neck pain. The electrode pads (white) are applied over or around a painful area, and an electrical charge is administered from a battery or other power output. This method is known as transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS). It is thought that electrotherapy works to reduce pain by either directly blocking the transmission of pain signals along nerves, or by promoting the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkilling compounds.
