This axial (cross sectional) CT image through a lumbar spine was obtained after a vertebroplasty procedure for the treatment of intractable pain related to an osteoporotic compression fracture. This is a great procedure to ameliorate pain related to compression fractures. It is usually done with the patient awake. A large bore needle is placed through the skin of the back and then through the pedicle of the compressed vertebral body. After the needle is positioned within the body of the vertebrae cement is instilled to stabilize the fractured vertebral body. The results are often dramatic with relief of severe pain.
