Radiotherapy. Doctor planning a radiotherapy treatment with the aid of a computerised imaging technique. Radiotherapy employes sources of radioactivity and is mainly used to treat cancer. Ionising radiations such as X-rays are directed to the area affected by cancer and, as they pass through the diseased tissue, destroy or slow down the development of abnormal cells. The main applications involve the treatment of cancer of the larynx, skin cancer, cancer of the cervix, Hodgkin's disease (a cancer of lymphoid tissue) and leukaemia. Radiotherapy may produce unpleasant side-effects including nausea, vomiting, fatigue and loss of hair.
