Radiotherapy. View of a female patient being prepared for radiation treatment. The patient is lying on a table, her head aligned in a grip to prevent movement during scanning. A radiographer is seen giving supervision. The scanner is the white device behind the radiographer. It will rotate in a circular motion around the head of the patient, while delivering penetrating radiation (X-rays, beta rays, or gamma rays). Many forms of cancer can be treated by radiotherapy. Modern radiotherapy techniques aim to deliver a radiation dose that is sufficient for the needs of treatment (killing cancer cells, for example) whilst doing minimal damage to surrounding tissues and organs.
