Radiotherapy. View of a patient undergoing radiation treatment. The patient is lying on a table, while the scanner (upper right) rotates in a circular motion delivering penetrating radiation (X-rays, beta rays, or gamma rays). Many forms of cancer can be treated by radiotherapy. Modern radiotherapy techniques aim to deliver a radiation dose that is sufficient for the needs of treatment (killing cancer cells, for example) whilst doing minimal damage to surrounding tissues and organs.
