Medical cyclotron. Technician working on a cyclotron (a type of particle accelerator) used for protontherapy to treat cancer. Protons are positively charged particles found in the atomic nucleus. Protontherapy uses beams of protons to irradiate tumours and kill the cancerous cells. Proton beams allow precise targetting of diseased tissues, with little damage to surrounding areas. Protontherapy is therefore useful to treat cancers near to delicate or vital organs, such as brain and eye tumours. Photographed at the Protontherapy Centre of Orsay, France.
