Bottle of Taxol, a novel (1992) chemotherapy compound found in the bark of the Pacific yew tree, which has proved highly effective against certain types of tumours, notably breast & ovarian cancer. The commercial development of Taxol as a chemotherapeutic is controversial, since its original source, the Pacific yew, is an endangered species. Various teams of scientists & drug companies have been researching alternative sources of the drug (the Himalayan yew, for example), looking for more sustainable means of extraction, or methods of producing the compound synthetically in the laboratory.
