Relaxed seated man receives an intravenous drip in the comfort of his own home. A variety of disorders requiring a chemical drug infusion into the blood, can be treated in this way. Apart from drugs, a saline drip infusion may contain amino acids, dextrose, fat, vitamins and minerals as a source of body nutrients. Blood may also be given in this way as a transfusion. An intravenous drip involves a slow and controlled flow of fluid into the bloodstream. Use of a cannula (a thin, hollow tube) provides a semi- permanent means of repeatedly introducing drugs via the drip into the circulation.
