Immunotherapy. A male patient lies in bed while receiving immunotherapy, an experimental treatment for cancer. An intravenous drip is connected to his arm. Immunotherapy aims to strengthen the immune system's defences against cancer cells. The technique is still experimental but may soon prove a useful adjunct to other therapies like chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Several forms of immunotherapy have been developed, including: use of immunostimulant drugs; direct administration of antibodies against tumour cells; injection of a culture of a patient's white blood cells after doping with interleukin-2 to stimulate "killer cell" proliferation.
