Vaccination of an elderly woman. A nurse about to inject a vaccine into the upper arm of an elderly woman. Influenza vaccines are typically given to the elderly in this way. These vaccines contain dead influenza viruses. When injected, the vaccine stimulates the body's immune system to produce antibodies that protect against future infection by live influenza viruses. Vaccinations against influenza are usually short-lived because the virus mutates into new forms that can overcome a patient's immunity. Nevertheless, vaccination is recommended for the elderly and anyone suffering from respiratory or circulatory disease.
