Caption

Syringe being filled. Hypodermic syringe being filled with a vaccine or drugs from a small vial. The syringe and needle will be used to inject the drugs into either a vein, muscle, under the skin or into the joint of a patient. A vaccine consists of dead or weakened strains of a bacteria or virus. The patient's immune system responds to the vaccine and so is prepared against future infection by a natural, dangerous strain of the disease. A syringe is used to administer drugs when a particular organ is being targeted or when the drug would be destroyed by the digestive system if taken orally.
