Child vaccination. Doctor injects a vaccine into a young boy's upper arm. Vaccines that provide protection against many infectious diseases are available to children and babies as part of their recommended immunization schedule. Vaccines consist of dead or weakened doses of disease-causing microorganisms which are injected into the body to stimulate the immune system. This makes the immune system able to rapidly detect and destroy a particular microorganism the next time that the person is exposed to it.
