Adult vaccination. Nurse injects a woman with vaccine on a hospital ward. Vaccines consist of dead or weakened doses of microorganisms which are injected into the body to stimulate the immune system. They provide protection against many infectious diseases. Many people are routinely vaccinated against various diseases when they are children, but booster vaccinations in adulthood are recommended for some illnesses such as tetanus.
