Hypodermic syringe. Hypodermic syringe being filled from a vial. A hypodermic syringe consists of a piston in a tight-fitting tube that is attached to a hollow needle. It is used to give injections of vaccines and of drugs that would be destroyed by digestive processes if taken by mouth. It is also used for drugs intended to have a localised effect. It is very important for the dose of the fluid to be measured accurately.
