MMR vaccination. MMR vaccination. The MMR vaccination protects infants from three diseases: measles, mumps and rubella. The vaccination consists of killed or weakened samples of the three causative agents in the diseases. The body's immune system easily deals with the agents (viruses in these cases), and learns how best to destroy them. If the body has contact with any of them again, they are destroyed quickly before any serious harm is done. Vaccines that provide protection against many infectious diseases are available to babies and young children as part of a recommended vaccination schedule.
