Subcutaneous injection. Gloved hand of a nurse gives a woman a subcutaneous (beneath the skin) injection into her arm. The nurse pinches the skin with one hand. The other hand inserts the needle into the arm. The gloves are used to maintain sterile conditions. This injection technique is used when administering a BCG (Bacillus Calmette- Guerin) vaccination which is used to stimulate the immune system against tuberculosis. Care must be taken when administering a BCG in this way as faulty injection technique can cause prolonged ulceration.
