Child vaccination. Male doctor injecting a vaccine into a young girl's arm. Vacc- ines are given to protect children and babies from infectious diseases. They consist of dead or weakened doses of disease-causing micro-organisms which are injected into the body to stimulate the immune system. Vaccines make the immune system able to rapidly detect and destroy those micro- organisms the next time they are encountered.
