MMR vaccination. Baby receiving the MMR triple vaccination. This protects infants from three diseases: measles, mumps and rubella. The vaccination consists of killed or weakened samples of the three viruses that cause the diseases. The body's immune system deals with the viruses and is now prepared (sensitised) for any future infections from these viruses. Vaccines that provide protection against many infectious diseases are given to babies and young children as part of a recommended vaccination schedule.
