Polio immunisation. Aerial view of a huge queue of people outside an auditorium being used as a polio immunisation centre, in 1962. The oral polio vaccine was developed in 1957 by Dr Albert Sabin. Polio (or poliomyelitis) is a viral disease that can attack the nervous system, leading to paralysis or death. Mass immunisation programs such as this have all but eradicated polio in the developed world. It remains a public health problem in the developing world, however. Photographed in San Antonio, Texas, USA.
