A 13-year old boy with Down's syndrome and a congenital heart condition chats with a voluntary helper at a holiday play scheme for handicapped children. The boy attends a special school for children with moderate learning difficulties, and has a good level of speech and self help skills. Down's syndrome is a type of mental subnormality due to a chromosome defect. The main physical features are slanted eyes, a flat nose on a round head and abnormalities of the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. Mental attainment is usually restricted to that of a five-year-old child - that is, with an I.Q. of between 50 and 60.
