Diabetic self-injecting Humulin-S insulin into his upper arm. Humulin-S is a short- acting and a soluble type of human insulin used to treat Diabetes mellitus. This is a disorder affecting the carbohydrate metabolism and it is caused by a lack or an insufficient production of the pancreatic hormone insulin. Sugars in the body are not oxidised to produce energy and tend to accumulate in the blood, the so called hyperglicemia and then in the urine. Typical symptoms include thirst, loss of weight and the excessive production of urine. Long term complications of diabetes include thickening of the arteries which can also affect the sight.
