Education for diabetic. Elderly woman patient receives counselling on diabetes from a health care worker. The counsellor is discussing the aspects of having a correct diet, blood and urine glucose testing, and the injection of insulin. Diabetes mellitus is a carbohydrate metabolism disorder, in which unused sugars accumulate in the blood and urine. It is usually caused by insufficient insulin production from the pancreas. Treatment of diabetes depends on the levels of sugar in the blood. A strict diet may be successful in controlling diabetes, or insulin injections may be necessary.
