Blood glucose testing. General practice doctor showing a patient how to use a home, blood glucose, testing kit. The stick (lower left) contains a fine needle, which is used to prick the skin to release a small drop of blood. The blood is then analysed by the device on the desk (lower centre), and a reading displayed on its LCD screen. Diabetics need to measure their blood glucose levels. Diabetes is a disorder in which the production of the hormone insulin, which regulates blood glucose levels, is reduced. Diabetic patients need to regularly check their blood glucose levels and inject themselves with insulin if they are abnormal.
