Blood glucose test. Packet containing a blood glucose monitoring system, used by diabetics to measure the level of glucose in the blood. In the kit there is a pricker, which is used to draw a drop of blood from the finger. The blood is placed on a test strip fitted into the digital glucometer for analysis. The blood glucose level is displayed on an LCD screen. Diabetics aim to maintain their blood glucose level at between 4 and 8 millimoles. Diabetes is caused by low levels of the hormone insulin. Without insulin the body's tissues cannot take up glucose, which can result in serious symptoms. Glucose is a sugar metabolized by the body to obtain energy.
