Blood glucose test. Packet and contents of a blood glucose monitoring system, used by diabetics to measure the level of glucose in the blood. A pricker (pen-shaped) is used to draw a drop of blood from the finger. The blood is placed on a test strip in the top of the digital glucometer (lower left) for analysis. The blood glucose level is displayed on an LCD screen. Diabetics aim to maintain their blood glucose level at between 4 and 8 millimoles. Diabetes is caused by low levels of the hormone insulin. Without insulin the body's tissues cannot take up glucose, which can result in serious symptoms. Glucose is a sugar metabolized by the body to obtain energy.
